FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. An Oak Reclining Armchair, designed for the William E. Martin House, Oak Park, Illinois, circa 1902

This is an example of a classic Arts and craft or prairie style as F.L.W would coin. This piece and much of this furniture style is heavily influenced by the medieval and middle age styles of the 5th to 15th century. Honest, exposed joinery. No ornamentation, just straight bold lines and heavy oak. The Chinese influence is also present in the use of frame and panel construction, waists, and "pierced" panels on the back.

SAM MALOOF. Ash Rocking Chair Circa 2003

This chair is more influenced by modern American craftsmanship and mid-century design rather than classical or European Middle Ages styles. The flowing, graceful curves in Maloof's rocking chair may echo some classical design principles, particularly in terms of organic lines and the importance of craftsmanship, though they are more aligned with Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements than anything from the European Middle Ages.
